Case Study: Switching Tea Sachet Overwrap to Ultra-High-Barrier, Mono-Material Paper
Paper Packaging for Tea Sachets, High Barrier First. Recyclability Built In.
A mono-material paper structure keeps aroma and freshness locked in, and keeps the sachet inside the paper recycling stream.
Tea sachets ask more of their packaging than almost any other category. The pack has to hold in aroma and freshness from the moment it is filled to the moment the sachet is opened, and it has to do that with a very thin, very light structure. For years, that has meant choosing between two imperfect options.
Plain paper is recyclable but does not hold a barrier. Foil or plastic-laminated paper holds the barrier tea needs, but the moment a foil layer is added, the sachet can no longer be recycled through the paper stream it was supposed to belong to.
The Problem: Why Most Paper Packs Fall Short
Most paper-based tea packaging on the market today still leans on a foil or plastic laminate to hold its barrier. That works technically, but it quietly disqualifies the pack from paper recycling, the exact stream it was designed to look like it belongs to.
The real question is not paper or plastic. It's whether the pack keeps its barrier and still recycles as paper.
The Solution: A Mono-Material Paper Structure
Melodea's approach for tea keeps the sachet in a single material family throughout, paper reinforced with the MelOx-NGen™ and VBseal™ coating platforms, rather than adding a separate foil or plastic layer. Nothing is bonded in that has to be pulled back out at end of life.
Freshness Retention
High and Ultra-High Barrier performance keeps tea fresh from packing to the moment the sachet is opened.
Aroma Barrier
An aromatic barrier layer is built into the same paper structure, with nothing laminated on separately.
Drop-In Ready
Runs on the filling and sealing lines tea producers already use, no new equipment or requalification.
Recyclable & Repulpable
Mono-material paper stays in the paper recycling and repulping stream, validated against PTS and Cepi paper recyclability standards.
Built Around Tea
The same mono-material paper structure is built to specification across tea formats, standard tea sachets, premium loose-leaf pouches, herbal blends, and specialty tea, matched to each brand's real barrier and production-line requirements rather than a one-size-fits-all sheet.
This is not a paper pack with a barrier bolted on. Barrier and recyclability are designed into the same structure from the start.
Melodea is an in-house converter, so the structure a brand qualifies is the structure it receives in production, with certifications for direct food contact and paper recyclability included per batch.
